Sembach Air Base

The tower of former Sembach Air Base, near Kaiserslautern. You have seen a very similar photo in my gallery before, but from a different airport. That would be the tower in Hahn, also a former USAF base. Most of these towers look the same. Just a different paintjob! Part of the base remains in active military use, now by the US Army, while the rest of it is being transformed into an industrial site or just slowly falling apart.

We also went up to a former radio relay site on the nearby Donnersberg, but despite the dishes being gone, sadly this place still looked somewhat active (the lights were on, a fair amount of security cameras installed) and had a lot of "NO PHOTOGRAPHY" signs, so I figured I'd obey.
